Peach Trees - Landcruiser Weekend By Jackie Carpenter
This report by Jackie covers some of the 4wding done by some of our members while we were camped at the Peach Trees camping area near Jimna. That report can be found by clicking "here".
August 15th - 16th, 2015.
Saturday morning after everyone arrived and set up camp a few of us headed up to Landcruiser Mountain Park for a bit of a play. We had four cars with us a stock BT50 (Grant and Brenda with Pete and Kell in tow ), a D22 (Grey, Me, John and Kyle) and 2 D40's (Brad and Gavin in one and Trent and Arielle in the other.
After we all checked in at the office, stuck on our stickers, we all headed up to Camp road where there seems to be always something happening.
As we aired down we watched an old GQ Patrol come up from down the beginning of the track. There were quite a few oh no moments when we thought he wasn't going to make it, but finally he was up the top. Following him was an 80 series Cruiser who after the first section way down the bottom made the rest look easy.
Decided that was enough to see and started off down the tracks to the rainforest that should have been easy. Turning right down Yelburn Road which at the beginning had deep ruts .I gave everyone the choice to go this way or go around it as you can end up on some interesting angles but everyone followed us down. We finally got to the gate which takes you into another section of the park. After coming across a creek which was going to be very interesting (a typical Jackie getting lost moment) to get across we reversed back and turn up into Prado parade as we thought this might an reasonably easy road but it was not to be.
The first section up a the hill was fine but as we went down the other side there were a few ruts. With the right line everyone got through but it was waiting for us on the other side. A nice knarly hill climb with tree roots, loose rocks, ruts and some steps however there was an easy track you could go around if you wished. Trent went up first and it was interesting to see. Grey headed up next threw the locker in to make it easier but couldn't steer so off it went. With a fair bit of right foot and a first for the nav, front wheel in the air up he went up making it look easy.
Grant was up next. With a lot of right foot and a couple of loose moments, I have never seen the BT lift wheels that high he made it up. You have to love these fancy cars with traction control etc. Brad was next, Peter put him up the side track and after an aborted first attempt and reversing back to have a better run at it, up he went.
What is the saying “What goes up must come down”. The next lot of down hills were steep, rocky, loose shale and pick your lines as there were some deep drop offs. A few back wheel up in the air moments for all of us. It is a very strange feeling when your on a ledge back wheel up in the air and rocking like a boat. All seemed to take the better tracks down except us. We that thought one might be easier but it wasn't.
We all made it back to the office in one piece and soon we were heading back to camp where Grey and Grant did a wood run and found quite a few interesting tracks that we will go back and explore another day.
