What an awesome weekend you missed out on if you didn't attend this one. This weekend marked a record for attendance with a total of 29 members and guests and we welcomed recent new members who were attending their first trip with the group. Kate and I were pleased to meet some new people, as I am sure other folk were too.
After meeting at Kilcoy we travelled North on the Kilcoy-Murgon Road until we reached a turn off to the left known as Monsildale Road. Rather than staying on the main road we took the turn off and had a very scenic drive through what was obviously cattle country. Rolling hills and long brown grass, and no shortage of cattle.
This was a good road and a smooth trip as it had been recently graded. Reaching the top end of Monsildale Road we turned right and were back on the Kilcoy-Murgon Road to backtrack for a few kilometres to the Peach Trees turn off. After a short drive into the camping area we soon found Jackie & Graham and the other members that had set up camp a day earlier.
Although this was more of a rest and relaxation weekend, hence the words "Chill Out" in the trip title, many members went for a wander around the forest and also took advantage of the fact that Landcruiser Mountain Park was just up the road and managed to get their 4WDing fix. Some leaving just after we arrived. Jackie has written a separate report on the 4WD'ing side of things, with photos, which can be found "here". It was a very social weekend but sadly, a couple of members were unwell and one couple left early as a result. We hoped they were feeling better soon.
We ended up with 3 distinct groups but Kate and I, and others I expect, did our best to get around and mingle. Had we all arrived at the same time it may have been possible to circle the wagons as the saying goes but some were lucky enough to arrive a day early and set up. We did however, all manage to camp in close proximity and enjoy each others company and all in all, the weekend went well. The Peach Trees camping area at Jimna is one that I think we would all agree, is one worth going back to.
With a nice deep swimming hole to use in summer, plenty of wildlife and scenery for the photography buffs and just an overall good vibeabout the place, it's one I will happily revisit. There were no shortage of Kangaroos around this place, many with joeys in tow, and of course, no camping trip would be complete without a Goanna cruising the campground and looking for a free feed. With the swimming hole, bush walks, wildlife, and even a suspension bridge, it's a great place for kids and adults alike. Nice new amenities blocks too.
Saturday night, some members did their own thing for dinner and some contributed to a previously arranged smorgasbord style meal which I think was a great success for all that contributed. We had pre dinner nibbles and then, roast beef, spit roast pork, pizza, potato bake, spicy potato slices, a vegetable curry, chicken, garlic bread, and ham lasagne. Brad was kind enough to do his famous Sticky Date Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce and Cream which was a big hit as usual.
I think I covered everything food wise. Many thanks to Tony & Kim for suggesting the idea and also for providing a couple of tables for the food and thanks to all the members that contributed to the evening meal. There were so many different flavours and it made for an awesome meal. On a side note, while editing this report I was going through the photos and trying to pick which photos to use was no easy task I can tell you.
Later in the evening most of us ended up around the campfire where the Friday arrivals had a cracker of a fire going and the usually campfire conversations followed. Eventually the numbers dwindled as each member disappeared to their own tents to retire for the evening. As with any camping ground with a lot of people, there were the usual noises from the late nighters that made getting to sleep a little... interesting.
Sunday 5:40am, after tossing and turning for about an hour having been awakened by the predawn conversations of others, the Kookaburras decided that something was funny and began their morning song which always seems to be a signal to all other birdlife to begin their morning chorus. It was quite pleasant to just take that time to lay there and appreciate nature. Kate got up earlier than I did to take some photos and I eventually dragged my lazy butt out of bed and made a cuppa.
Before Breakfast, some of us went for a walk and took photos, myself being Kate's designated bag boy (carrying the camera bag). Each of us did our own thing for breakfast and Kate and I had bacon and toast with eggs cooked in capsicum egg rings, all cooked on a BBQ plate given to us as a parting gift by member Jo Ana(now home in Germany) , and heated on a fire built by Brett and Sarah. The weekend saw a lot of sharing and co operation which quite frankly, should be more common in our world.
We were in no rush to pack up but eventually we did and Darryl & Carmel and Brett & Sarah followed Kate and I on an off road route back to the D'aguilar Highway at Kilcoy. Along the way we stopped on the roadside and made a cuppa and had some lunch and a chat before driving the last few kilometres to the highway, where we parted company with Darryl & Carmel and then at Woodford, we parted company with Brett & Sarah. Kate and I went home via the dirt through the Glasshouse Mountains, although we stayed on Gazetted roads, passing the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout on the way home.
All in all I think it was a fabulous weekend and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Those that wanted to sit and relax did exactly that, and those that wanted to go 4wding got to go and do it. Great food, great company and good times were had by all. As usual, I would like to thank all those that came along and made the weekend a success and Kate and I are looking forward to Brooyar State Forest next month where Jackie and Graham will show us some tracks on their home turf.
As usual, photos without the watermark may be purchased in various sizes by visiting the shop page "here" and quoting the image number that appears on mouseover or in the caption. If the image belongs to a member, you will be put in touch with that member. Any money raised from photo sales goes back into the group in the form of free raffle prizes.
