We are very privileged to have some fantastic people in our group and the Goos Family certainly fall within that category. Those of us that attended this weekend event can attest to the generosity and hospitality shown to us all when we camped on their family farm in early December.
A lot of work was put in by the Goos in preparation for the event, including the tidying up and mowing of a nice grassed area for us to camp on, and the creation of a track to play on, although I never got to see this track myself. A port-a-loo was also arranged by the Goos at a very modest fee.
Some members managed to arrive and set up camp on the Friday night and went on a night drive and although I don't have the details of this, I may be able to get some photos from other members to add in later. Kate and I arrived later than planned on Saturday afternoon after some disastrous navigation on my part. It only added 30 minutes to the trip but it was annoying all the same. We arrived to find about a dozen campsites already set up but had no trouble finding a nice spot to set up ourselves.
Some folk brought along their camper trailers, some folk just tented it. Alison had a near disaster with her new (2nd hand) camper trailer when an electrical fault caused a fire which melted the battery and wiring and almost took the tent with it but some quick thinking and response from Robert with an extinguisher saved the day. Alison's insurance will cover the damages but it wasn't a pleasant start to her weekend that's for sure.
Without details from other members that arrived Friday, I can only tell you about our experiences on the Saturday evening and Sunday. Saturday evening, after setting up camp and having dinner, some of us went for a night drive. It was an easy drive but it was fun all the same. Sunday was a different story however as we did the same track, but this time got to play on some not so easy side tracks. The great thing about this area was the fact that there were bypass tracks (commonly known as chicken tracks) around all the nasties.
Those of us that wanted to tackle something a bit more technical were able to do so and those that didn't, were able to avoid such spots. Later on Sunday we ended up at the Gus Beutel Lookout in Ravensbourne National Park where we had refreshments, chatted, took photos etc.. and a couple of us did a short bush walk on a loop track through a lovely patch of forest. After that we made our way back to camp and started packing for the trip home.
I can't add any more detail without input from other members but, I can tell you that it was a very enjoyable weekend and that we had about 21 or 22 members & guests in attendance. As far as I know, everyone enjoyed themselves and we will definitely be taking up the Goos family on their offer for a return trip in 2016.
