A Day Trip to Bribie Island (aka; A meeting with Eric the Emu) By Sue Walker.
Sunday, August 2nd 2015.
On Sunday, Gary and I headed off nice and early (6.15am) to Bribie Island, specifically the Ocean Beach end. It was a lovely cool morning drive from Petrie, the sun slowly rising and mist across the low lying areas. We stopped off on the southern side of the bridge to get some bait and saw that the water in the Pumicestone Passage was very calm.
After letting the air down on the tyres in the car park, we headed down the track towards the beach which was in fairly good condition. Didn’t even break any eggs this time. As it was early, there were very few people on the beach and the tide was not due to reach high for another hour or so, so we made our way towards the bunkers, just for the pleasure of driving on an almost deserted beach. We stopped a couple of times so that I could take photos of the sun rising above the horizon and shining on the very calm water. Beautiful.
As we were driving along, we were lucky enough to see a kangaroo hopping along the beach. Quickly taking photos through the windscreen, we followed him along until he went up into the dunes as we passed. Next thing we knew, he was hopping along beside the car, almost as though he was racing us. I was so excited to see a wild kangaroo on the beach, as we had never seen one before in all the many times we had been there.
It was a day of seeing lots of things, a beautiful Brahminy kite flying around near where we camped for the day, an enormous container ship doing a couple of u-turns in the ocean before coming very close to the beach and heading off to Port of Brisbane. Following this ship was another one with cranes on it. Then there was the large group of jet skiers having fun. Gary was even lucky enough to see a dolphin. We even watched a gyrocopter and a small plane flying around. All of this before lunch. My camera was going crazy lol.
We tried doing a bit of surf fishing in the fairly cold water, but had no success. Mainly, we sat around chatting, contemplating life (like what were the rich people doing?), playing with my metal detector (no success there either) and taking photos. Very relaxing.
In the afternoon, Adam Gallagher joined us, just in time for a BBQ lunch. He kindly provided a gazebo and some lovely dessert to share with us. He had had an interesting trip along the beach, watching people being pulled over by the police and also got to see the famous Eric the Emu. I was so jealous as I had never seen him lol.
While we were sitting eating lunch, Jordy Brindley turned up and joined us. As we all chatted, it was decided that, as neither Adam nor Jordy had seen the bunkers, we would all travel back up the beach to check them out. At the last one, it was decided that we would take a group photo of all of us, so Adam got out his tripod and we put my camera on timer. We all had a laugh as I pressed the button, checked it was going and then ran back to the car. I don’t run lol.
After checking out the bunkers and getting some more photos, we planned to head back via the inland track. Unfortunately, for some strange reason, we discovered that it was closed so we had to go home via the beach. Glad we did, there was a large eastern grey kangaroo on the beach who was quite happy to pose for pictures. The sun was also starting to set, so the colours were beautiful. We also got to see a cruise ship in the distance and a play on the soft sand.
Adam was in front at this stage, when he spied Eric the Emu and told us where he was. So we all stopped again and took yet more photos. I was happy-as-larry, as I finally got to see him lol. Jordy was able to get quite close to him, he was a bit braver than me lol. Adam discovered that he had stopped in some very soft sand and was stuck, but was able to get himself out with his maxtrax. Then it was back onto the hard sand before the exit.
We said goodbye to Jordy in the carpark before going to the BP to inflate our tyres. By this time it was dark. The UHF was in good use as we and Adam heading back to Petrie. All in all, it was a marvellous day at the beach. Great weather and great company.
