What a great long weekend at Columboola Country. Stay close to the amenities or disappear into the bush, it was our choice. Since Darryl & Carmel had the grandkids with them they opted for a powered site so we stayed & camped close to the amenities. Since Darryl had told me this ahead of time, I lightened our load by leaving our portable toilet & shower at home.
We were originally going to have the usual 5 to 6 car average but circumstances caused a couple of last minute drop outs so we only had 3 vehicles. Darryl & Carmel with grandkids Kimberley & Samuel in tow, Gary & Sue, and Kate & myself. We have to give our thanks to Gary again for his willingness to cut & cart firewood for us. There was certainly no shortage of dead timber around the property and some of it was ironbark and burned extremely well.
Not a huge amount of 4wd'ing to do here and in dry weather it's mostly doable in 2wd but we did get out for a little bit of a play. We met a fellow named Pat that was staying there and knew the place well and he showed us around a bit and took us to the bat caves where those that were agile enough crawled inside to see the bats. (see photos below) The kids thought it was great but weren't keen on venturing too deep into the cave.
There was a walking track that did a loop around camp for a couple of kilometres and a creek which still held water despite the drought but I wouldn't be keen to swim in it until it had a good flush out from some decent rain which they have had since our visit. There was an entertainment room with a TV, pool table etc, where some disappeared to watch the football. Kate and I were tired and had an early night.
Aside from the limited driving around the property and seeing the bat caves, there were old buildings and farming implements and such that made for some good photos and the kids seemed to enjoy it too.
Minty the sheep was a hit with the kids as well as visiting and resident dogs, but I would have to say that for Kate and I, the 4 hour drive there and back was just as enjoyable as our stay at Columboola Country and was part of the overall adventure. Out of over 900 photos that Kate took, I have kept it to a little over 200, but I'm sure it will still give a good feel for the trip if you were not with us. Quite a short report from a written point of view, but I'm hoping the photos make up for that.
Kate and I would like to thank those that came along and made the weekend special.
Thanks for reading.
