What a great weekend with great people, as always. We set off from our meeting point, on schedule, with 5 vehicles. We had Brad & Gavin, Peter & Kellie, Graham & Jackie, Jordy, and Kate and myself of course. After a brief discussion with Brad, who had done the trip several times before, we decided to head north via the inland track and check out the other camping areas on the way up to our own camp on the Ocean Beach. We camped in area P which had a toilet block and cold showers for those that were brave enough to use them.
Once we were set up we met up with Rodney & Rachael and John, Mandy & Emma, who had arrived the day before. Sue & Gary arrived later in the day due to work commitments. The afternoon was spend differently by each member with some going for a drive, some sitting around for a chat, and/or walking on the beach, or taking photos etc. All up we ended up with 8 vehicles and 16 people, our biggest group so far. I had arranged for the evening to be a Campfire Dessert Competition. We had attempts & failures at a couple of things by a few people but the clear winner was Brad's creation.
Brad made (in his camp oven) a sticky date pudding which he topped with a butterscotch sauce and a dollop of double thick cream. It was an absolute smash hit. Brad even provided bowls & spoons. Kate opted to make waffle cones stuffed with strawberries, banana, marshmallows and choc chips but Sue was already making some so Kate just did one for Jordy. Unfortunately Sue's didn't work out. The oranges stuffed with chocolate brownie mix (Kate's other dessert attempt) didn't work out either. Some folk didn't try to make a dessert but those of us that were lucky enough to taste Brad's dessert didn't really care I'm sure.
We all sat around the campfire and our number dwindled as the evening went on. It was a late night for Kate and I as far as camping goes. I think it was close to midnight by the time we hit the sack. Sunday was a lazy start to the day with Kate and I being the last to pack up. We had a quick discussion on whether to go and see the bunkers or not and also whether we should go back via the beach or the inland track and after hitting the beach it was decided to head South before the tide got too high. Although it wasn't a big tide, there wasn't a lot of beach to drive on.
The plan was to get across all 3 lake outflows before the high tide and then we could pretty much hang around as long as we wanted to and leave at our leisure. Out of the remaining 7 vehicles (Sue and Gary left earlier) Rodney & Rachael, Peter & Kellie, Brad & Gavin and John, Mandy & Emma decided to head home and beat the traffic which left Graham & Jackie, Jordy, and Kate & myself. We all had a cuppa and Kate & Jackie took a few million photos.
We packed up and headed for home in a convoy of 3, with Jordy taking his exit and Graham & Jackie, Kate & I travelling together up the highway until our exit at Caloundra. Not a big report this time around as we didn't drive a lot and pretty much just chilled out around camp. This was a first visit to Bribie for some of us but We will definitely be doing it again in the future. What a great place, and so close to home. As soon as we can spare the money we will be buying an annual permit.
On another note, I was pleased to see folks willing to quickly spring into action and help others in a couple of situations which arose on the Sunday. I won't go into details, I will just say that it was great to see. We really do have some great people in this group.
Our thanks to those that came and made the weekend special.
